Outside of personal or home defense, the 12 gauge remains a favored hunting tool, especially for birding applications where it is capable of putting out a mass of shot at range to bring down the game limit on the fly as quickly as possible. Steel shot is becoming required more often for use against waterfowl, to replace that made from lead. Steel is lighter than lead and will have more shot to meet the same weight classification as lead. Steel also tends to spread less broadly. The 3.5” shell by Federal fires 1.5 ounces of shot, up to 93 steel pellets that are 4.8mm or .19” in diameter (sized BBB) at approximately 1500 feet per second. It is important for shooters to be aware of their chamber size to accept 3-1/2” shells.
