The 20 gauge shotgun is not the next gauge down, from the ubiquitous 12 gauge, but it is undeniably the next most common. At approximately 75% of the volume and recoil of the 12, it is a common choice for novice shooters as well as others who may be recoil sensitive to the comparatively brutish 12ga. When it comes to weighted shot, however, a 1 oz 20ga has just as much shot as a 1 oz 12ga. Federal’s 3” 1 ounce 20 gauge shell fires up to 125 steel #2 (.15”) pellets at up to 1350 feet per second. Steel’s lighter weight means more pellets per ounce with deeper penetration within range. It is also required in most areas for environmental reasons. As many shotgun chambers are limited to 2-3/4”, it is important to check before attempting to load and fire these 3” shells.
