Details

Developed from the .223 Remington cartridge, the 5.56mm became the standard light rifle round in the 1960s, not only of the United States military but for the entirety of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). While diminutive in size, the bullet relies on hyper velocity to deliver impressive terminal performance for use out of any of the military style rifles that are popular in the US today. It is also used for target shooting, but care should be taken to ensure the chamber is rated for 5.56 NATO, and not .223 Remington: while the two rounds are virtually identical, the 5.56 is loaded to higher pressures. Winchester’s 55 grain, full metal jacket bullet has a muzzle velocity of 3270 feet per second with 1306 foot pounds of energy. This is a cartridge that is perfect for range training and target practice, but also for both informal and official competitions.

The Winchester “white box” is a popular benchmark for quality ammunition. Still made in association with the Olin Corporation, Winchester is a proven and trusted brand, not only in their finished products but also for the boxer primed brass sought after by reloaders as well as by smaller manufacturers for their own cartridges.
