Details

Russian development of a mid-sized rifle round was pushed forward in 1943 during World War II when the Russians captured a new German rifle, the STG-43, which fired the new German 8mmx33 or 8mm Kurz, or, 8mm short. The performance of the new round impressed Soviet authorities enough for them to explore a new middle round for themselves. The movement away from full sized rifle rounds was inspired by data learned in the earlier war where engagement differences were considerably shorter than the 800 plus yards standard rifles were capable. Another impetus was a round that could deliver rifle like ballistics but be controllable in automatic fire.

This 122 grain full metal jacket round by Wolf has a muzzle velocity of 2362 feet per second with 1550 foot pounds of energy. This is a good 7.62x39 round for target shooting and range training with any of the number of military surplus rifles available on the market as well as a growing number of commercial sport rifles, like the Ruger American or Mini-30.

Wolf AK-47 ammunition has long provided a commercial outlet for Russian surplus style ammunition. Steel cased and Berdan primed, Wolf ammo was initially produced by the Russian Tula arsenal before being broadened and outsourced to other state and private arsenals.
