Russian development of a mid-sized rifle round was pushed forward in 1943 during World War II when the Russians captured a new German rifle, the STG-43, which fired the new German 8mmx33 or 8mm Kurz, or, 8mm short. The performance of the new round impressed Soviet authorities enough for them to explore a new middle round for themselves.
