The 10mm Auto was designed in the 1980s as a sporting round but very quickly was considered as a service round for the FBI. While briefly adopted by the Feds, it was also found to have more recoil than many agents could handle, so there was a quick redesign to create a 10mm short, aka the .40 S&W. The 10mm, however, continued to gain followers by those looking for a potent personal defense round, be it on the streets or in the woods.
