Details

Designed in the 1940s by the Soviets in response to the need to have a harder hitting caliber that can be managed effectively in full auto, for an “assault rifle” the 7.62x39 was designed for reliable use in extreme environments. While it was replaced in the 1970s for Soviet and Russian use, the round remains one of the most prolific military calibers in the world. For sporting purposes, the round is very effective for mid-sized game in a growing number of bolt action, sporting and hunting rifles. The 123 grain soft point bullet by Sellier & Bellot has a muzzle velocity of 2,437 feet per second with 1622 foot pounds of energy. The soft point is the balance between maximum ballistics and expansion on contact and is ideal for either hunting or civil defense.

Sellier & Bellot’s experience with making ammunition runs back to the 1820’s and is world famous for production of quality components including brass cases that are reloadable. With the bulk amounts of steel cased 7.62x39 ammo out there, this is a high quality cartridge for further explorations of this caliber’s capabilities, especially in the higher quality chambers and barrels of non-military rifles.
