Germany's first 8mm Mauser was adopted in 1888 during the age of discovery of smaller caliber, smokeless powder. However, it was quickly improved to a spitzer, or pointed bullet, and higher pressure that replaced the M88 by 1905. The 7.92x57mm Mauser became one of the most prolific military calibers in the world throughout Europe, China and Africa. It was perhaps the only rifle round to serve on both sides of World War II and continued service briefly after the war until ultimately replaced by either NATO or Warsaw Pact doctrines, depending on the location and politics of the region.
