Details

Following two years after Hornady’s introduction of the .17HMR in 2002, the .17 Hornady Mach 2 (HM2) was introduced in 2004 to offer rimfire wildcatters a commercially available cartridge for conversions. Built on the same principle of the HMR, the HM2 takes a .22 caliber case, in this scenario the .22LR and necks it down to accept a .17 caliber performance bullet weighing half as much. This generated greater velocity and with it flatter shooting and extended range. While not as powerful as the magnum version, the reduced cost in materials and finished product have made it a very popular varmint and target shooting round. The 17 grain Vmax bullet by Hornady has a muzzle velocity of 2100 ft per sec with 166 ft lbs of energy. This is designed for both competitive shooting and delivering maximum energy to the target when hunting small game.

Hornady’s name inspires confidence among performance shooters because the company, in addition to designing this cartridge in the first place, has a well-recognized reputation for providing consistent performance shot after shot. Their Vmax bullet wrote the book, as it were, on poly tipped projectiles delivering superior accuracy and optimal expansion: the very components necessary to define success in the field.
