Details

The .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (HMR) was developed in 2002 by Hornady by necking down the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR). This was done in an effort to duplicate the performance of the now obsolete 5mm Remington Magnum Rimfire from the 1960s. It is a relatively inexpensive round that reaches or exceeds 2500 feet per second, giving it a flat trajectory and very good accuracy. The 17 grain V-Max bullet by Hornady has a muzzle velocity of 2550 feet per second and 245 foot pounds of energy. The full metal jacket offers superior ballistic coefficients and accuracy while the polymer tip of the V-Max bullet offers dramatic expansion upon impact, making this a prized cartridge for varmint hunting as well as target shooting. Due to the high pressure of this round, there are few semiautomatic firearms available, but for the Savage A17, most had difficulty not extracting the case before it was done expanding upon cartridge ignition.

Joyce Hornady began munitions component production by teaming up with Vernon Speer in the early 1940's by making bullet jackets from spent rimfire cases. After World War II, they began acquiring surplus ammunition making machinery from the United States. Since the 1960's Hornady has been known for the premium quality of their hunting and self defense ammunition. 50 rounds of .17 HMR, does its part to hit the target if you do yours.
