Details

World War I taught the French that their once revolutionary 8mm Lebel was falling behind in the advance of modern technology --- but they had to wait until the end of the war: wisely deciding a caliber change in the middle of a conflict was unwise. Their first solution was a 7.5 x57 round which, though ballistically acceptable was too similar to the German (their most likely adversary to their minds between the world wars) 7.92x57 and a French soldier in a rush picking up the wrong round on the battlefield could cause a problem. So in 1929, the 7.5x54 was introduced and adopted for a new series of MAS battle rifles.

This ammo is loaded with 139 grain full metal jacket bullets by PRVI and delivers a muzzle velocity of 2723 feet per second and 2284 foot pounds of energy. The 7.5 was never really adopted commercially and only the French military (and Foreign Legion) adopted the cartridge. Military collectors focusing on this period are no doubt tickled that modern production has been taken up by PRVI.

PRVI Partizan provides service ammunition to the Serbian military as well as commercial export in modern calibers. Their line of “old military” calibers, however, continues to attract attention from C&R collectors and historical weapons shooters looking to keep their relics running at the range to this day. Reloadable cases and non-corrosive primers only sweeten the deal.
