When the Russians adopted a new standard issue military sidearm in 1895 they did it with characteristic simplicity when it came to caliber, but an equally characteristic attention towards being “Russian.” In other words, being different. The caliber, 7.62 was the same as their Mosin rifles, which kept machining simple and consistent. The design of the 7.62 Nagant Rimmed, however, departs tradition. The bullet is set within the casing and crimped in place. This is because the M1895 cylinder does not just line up with the forcing cone but is moved forward to “seal” the cone into the cylinder face when the revolver is cocked. The crimp then opens when the cartridge is fired providing a further gas seal so no energy is lost. While the amount of energy saves is debatable, the M1895 does remain one of the only revolvers in the world that is a candidate for use with a silencer. The PRVI/PPU’s 98 grain jacketed bullet has a muzzle velocity of 738 ft per sec with 119 ft lbs of energy. This is a lighter shooting round than what the military was issued but is ideal for target shooting or just plinking with the Curio & Relics.
