20 Gauge Ammo Shells
In general, a 20 gauge shotgun can be expected to produce less recoil than a 12 gauge shotgun of similar weight. 20 gauge shotshells fire approximately an ounce of shot at a muzzle velocity of around 1,200 feet per second. 20 gauge ammo firing buckshot is usually intended for self defense; however, slug shells are available that work well for hunting deer and other game at a reasonable range. Birdshot loads are used for shooting birds of both the clay and feathered variety.
20 gauge ammo used for hunting waterfowl often comes in higher-velocity variants with a 3" hull length. This results in greater recoil but also better terminal ballistics without the need to use a more powerful shotgun.
