Russia’s development of a mid-sized rifle, or “assault rifle” cartridge remains one of the most popular, or at least common, calibers in the world. The 7.62x39 was created in 1943 and put into use at the end of World War II in the Simonov rifle. Of course, its most common usage in in the AK-47. The caliber, like the rifle, was designed to work under extreme circumstances of environment in cycling and ignition. In recent years, the caliber has been adopted for use in sporting rifles for its reliability and effectiveness. The 123 grain, full metal jacket round from Silver Bear has a muzzle velocity of 2400+ ft per sec with over 1550 ft lbs of energy. Originally started near St. Petersburg, Russia by Tsar Alexander I, the arsenal that was eventually relocated to the city of Barnaul during World War II is where the Silver Bear ammunition is produced. This is the same source of virtually half of all Russian munitions since WWII. Zinc plating of steel cases help aid in feeding and cycling of the ammunition while the standards of Russian durability are maintained.
