Details

The .308 Winchester is the more commonly used of the 7.62NATO/.308 pair of cartridges. This is because it is a sporting caliber that less associated with the “military” caliber in gun nervous states (albeit still banned as a military caliber in countries that do that sort of thing) and because it is actually loaded to marginally higher pressures than the NATO round, giving hunters a little extra for their short action game rifles. For match shooting – be it Civilian Marksmanship Program style or other, less formal - it also offers certain advantages in positive action cycling and a wider availability of bullet types to consumers. The 146 grain full metal jacket bullet by Hirtenberger has a muzzle velocity of 2751 feet per second with 2428 foot pounds of energy. This is an ideal round for training with accuracy or firearms familiarity or for competitions.

The Austrian munitions maker Hirtenberger recently sold off its small arms ammunition facilities to the German RUAG corporation. This Berdan primed, brass cased cartridge is typical of military production overruns. It is not readily reloadable but is instead loaded to martial standards of reliable ignition and long storage shelf life.
