Details

.45 Automatic Colt Pistol Cartridge remains an obvious choice for use in both target shooting and home defense: the large caliber bullet is relatively slow moving so does not over penetrate either the target or the backstop, thereby transferring all of its energy into the target. Slow moving also means stable and accurate explaining why the caliber holds on over a century after its introduction with competitive and defensive shooters.

Federal’s American Eagle offers this full metal jacketed, 230 grain bullet with a muzzle velocity of 890 feet per second with 405 foot pounds of energy. Loaded with enough energy to cycle the stingiest of actions, it is also a popular choice for use out of .45 caliber carbines, it is well suited for introductory, training and competitive shooting.

American Eagle is a popular brand in its own right, but that is because it is manufactured to Federal’s specifications for dependable performance and use of quality brass cases that are reloadable. Federal has been making dependable sporting ammunition since the 1920s, and while its Premium line is what sport shooters take into the field, the economy of the AE line is what keeps them merrily making holes in paper and knocking down gongs at the range.

Good Power

  • Quality
Shot a few boxes of this when I got it from a friend who still had a hundred rounds left but had sold his 1911 and shot only .40 S&W. I found it pretty warm in regards to power level. I have a 22 lb spring in my 1911 and it still threw the brass a good 10 feet at least. I compared it to the PMC Bronze that I have and it is noticeably more powerful in recoil and slide movement. I am thinking it would make a great training round if you plan on shooting +P defense loads and want something comparable to practice with and save money.
