Details

NATO’s adoption of the 5.56x45 round provides the same benefits as the US military’s adoption of the .223 such as well known stats and figures and also mass production that can at times exceed the limits of the imagination. The other benefit is that there is often times a lot of ammunition available in times of surplus. The XM855 (green tip) bullets by Lake City earn the XM designation for not being accepted by the military for reasons as simple as quantities. The color code identifies these rounds as having a mild steel core and are sometimes referred to as “penetrators” but are not the same as AP or armor piercing. The bullets are the same that are used in the US military. The 62 grain green tip, full metal jacketed rounds leave the muzzle at 3020 feet per second with 1255 foot pounds of energy. These are ideal for military style target competitions or for use in civil defense drills.

The Lake City Ammunition Plant in Missouri was founded in 1941 by Remington to make ammo for the US Army in World War II. In 1985 it was taken over by the Olin Corporation (as in Winchester’s parent corporation) and continues to provide ammunition and testing for the US military and NATO and is also the provider of mil surplus ammunition to DCM and regular commercial outlets.
