Details

The Soviet development of the 7.62x39 medium cartridge was a direct result of the German 8mm Kurzs (short) deployment in 1943. While medium rifle cartridges were contemplated by all major powers going into World War II, the Germans were the first to field one in the War (unless one recognizes the United States’ .30 Carbine round, which is certainly a valid perspective). However, as with virtually all of Germany’s military innovations, they (thankfully) failed to manufacture enough 8mm Kurz to be strategically decisive. The Soviet’s were unable to field their own cartridge and new rifle (SKS) until the end of the war, but with the introduction of the AK47 and expansion of Soviet influence throughout the world, the 7.62x39 has become the most widely used rifle round in the world. Tula’s 122 grain hollow point bullet exits the muzzle at 2330 ft per sec with up to 1550 ft lbs of energy. It is ideal for range and firearms training as well as civil defense, though many remark upon its acceptability for hunting by virtue of it being a HP round: it is better than FMJ, though arguably not as effective as a soft point: refer to local hunting laws.

Tula Cartridge Works has been making the 7.62x39 cartridge since the beginning. Actually, they have been making Russian military ammunition since the end of the 18th century, so it is a safe bet that they know what they are doing when it comes to this cartridge. Steel cased, Berdan primed and non-corrosive these rounds are made for dependability above reloadability.
