Details

Winchester introduced the .38-40, or .38 Winchester Center Fire (WCF) in 1874 for use in their popular lever action rifles and carbines. Many people have wondered, however, why. It is only marginally less energy than the .44-40 from which it was developed. One explanation is that recoil is correspondingly less and it was an alternate round for new or smaller shooters. Though it was initially only a rifle round, modern cowboy action revolver makers have adopted the caliber for use in single action models in the interest of authenticity (of caliber, if not firearm).

This 180 grain, flat nosed lead bullet from Black Hills has a muzzle velocity of approximately 1160 feet per second with 538 foot pounds of energy. It is ideal for SASS style shooting and the flat front of the bullet not only makes for easier reads off of paper targets but are also safe for use in rifles and carbines.

Black Hills Ammunition made their name in the production of cartridges for cowboy action shooting and is one of the most popular choices for uses, especially in timed matches where dependable performance is crucial. Even better, they are loaded on boxer primed cases to allow reuse by serious competitors.
