Originally billed as a varmint round that was often questioned for being good enough for military service, the .223 Remington has evolved since its 1962 introduction to becoming a round capable of dealing with medium sized game in the field thanks to ever evolving bullet designs. The cartridge is also wonderful diversified in that it can be safely fired in 5.56 NATO chambers (though vice versa is not recommended: 5.56 NATO should not be fired in .223 Remington chambers).
