44 Russian Ammo

Introduced in 1870, .44 Russian ammo was developed by Smith & Wesson for a revolver contract for the Imperial Russian Army. This cartridge is known for its internal lubrication and for being the parent cartridge of the famous .44 Special and .44 Magnum rounds. Despite its origin as an export round, the .44 Russian became popular in the United States for target shooting due to its excellent accuracy.

Today, .44 Russian ammo is still made for target shooting. Most loads in this caliber use lead flat nosed ammo that is great for target shooting but may not be suitable for indoor ranges. A typical load fires a 200-250 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of around 750 feet per second. Due to its relatively low velocity, the .44 Russian is not as punishing in the recoil department as the later magnum cartridges.
