45 ACP Ammo

The .45 ACP is the top dog of large-caliber defensive cartridges well over a century after its introduction in 1904. While closely associated with the M1911 pistol, Thompson SMG, and other classics, it is also used in modern handguns from Glock, S&W, SIG, and many other manufacturers.

A relatively powerful round, .45 Auto ammo exacts a price for its performance in the form of significant recoil. The recoil produced by .45 ammunition, however, is not particularly snappy and feels more like a hard shove. Many shooters find it more fun (and less fatiguing) to fire a few boxes of .45 ACP rather devoting their entire range session to it.

Conventional .45 ACP ammo propels a heavy 230 grain full metal jacket bullet to a muzzle velocity of 850 feet per second. Defensive loads are often configured to favor expansion over penetration; many jacketed hollow points fire a lighter 185 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity closer to 1,000 feet per second. In any configuration, the .45's high caliber definitely makes a difference!
