Details

Developed in 2003, Ruger’s .480 was that company’s offering in a time period seeing new larger and more powerful cartridges being offered to handgun hunters seeking to be able to take on increasingly larger and potentially dangerous game. For a moment it was the largest revolver factory load available, eclipsing the capabilities of the august .44 Magnum Remington, and to date it still offers knock down ballistics similar to the .454 Casull without as much blast or recoil due to a slower and heavier bullet. The 325 grain hollow point bullet from Hornady caters to the easier recoil with a muzzle velocity of 1350 feet per second with 1315 foot pounds of energy. It is primarily a personal defense load, though it is well suited for use as a hunting cartridge.

Hornady’s beginning in the shooting word began in the 1940’s with bullet jacket manufacturing from spent rimfire cases. After World War II and purchasing surplus ammunition presses from the US government, Hornady began making premium hunting and range ammunition, but is most well known for its personal defense line of ammunition. Of course, boxer primed cases are reloadable for handloading this large and versatile round.
