6.8 SPC’s history as an ammunition cartridge goes back to the early 2000’s and the military.

In 2004 the United States military experienced a concern over the terminal ballistic capabilities of the standard issue M4 carbine at close to medium ranges. This inspired the development of several alternative calibers that could be chambered in an alternative AR platform upper and still feed off of AR Magazines with a minimum of alterations. One of the most successful was the 6.8 Remington Special Purpose Carbine ammunition, which delivers very similar performance to the 7.62x39 Russian cartridge, but with the expected accuracy of the AR rifle system. Although it never was adopted for complete adoption throughout the military, it nevertheless won over more than a few Special Forces teams for use on specific missions.
