Details

One of the three most popular sidearm caliber in the United States (which placement of the three is dependent upon personal preference), the .40 S&W ammo was introduced in 1990 as a 10mm Auto “short.” Bridging the gap between a 9mm velocity and a .45 kinetic energy, this round was a primary law enforcement cartridge from its introduction in 1990 to 2017. During that time it has always been recognized as the cartridge with the snappiest recoil, particularly in the lighter grain loads. Hornady’s Z-Max bullet is a polymer tipped, 165 grain jacketed bullet that has a stated muzzle velocity of 1045 feet per second with 400 foot pounds of energy. Similar to a light .45 ACP loaded for defense, the .40 is designed to take those stresses and can usually provide higher magazine capacity for personal defense in the woods or on the streets.

As far as performance grade ammunition, Hornady is chosen most often by the professionals, both celebrities and the everyday law enforcement. The Z-Max branding appeals to the “zombie” craze, but is no less a product than the company’s popular and often imitated V-Max bullet: poly tipped for optimum feeding and accuracy with maximum expansion after impact. These 200 rounds are ideal for keeping on hand for the go bag.
