Details

The .223 Remington remains one of the most popular rounds in the US for sport shooting, varmint hunting and civil defense. Introduced in 1964 as the caliber for the new US military rifle, the AR15/M16 series of rifles, the .223 is capable of being fired out of .223 and 5.56 NATO chambers safely. This versatility only serves to increase the caliber’s commercial success, and while there have been many efforts to replace the caliber both in and out of the military, it continues to be a dependable cartridge. The 55 grain Z Max bullet by Hornady has a muzzle velocity of 3240 feet per second with 1282 foot pounds of energy. This bullet is made for varmint hunting as well as defense.

Premium defense and sporting ammunition has been made available from Hornady since the 1960’s with their premium round being the polymer tipped V Max bullet, designed for maximum ballistics performance with a complete transferal of that energy into the target with controlled expansion. The Hornady “Z Max” bullet is virtually identical, just with a marketing strategy geared towards “zombie control.” Almost universally agreed to be a joke, this is a round for practical applications with a limited edition run for collectors.
