In 1898 Smith & Wesson introduced the .38 Special as a new chambering for their Hand Ejector model revolver. It was meant to be an improvement upon Colt’s .38 Long which, after being field tested by the US military, had been found to be insufficient to the tasks set before it. The .38 Special, on the other hand eventually found itself to be a primary law enforcement round, then a popular target shooting and private defense caliber.
