Details

The use of shotshells as a personal defense hand gun cartridge has been encouraged by the development of the .410 chambered revolver. These firearms are capable of shooting the .45 Long Colt cartridge (and some even take the .45 ACP or even .454 Casull), with which it shares a common case rim, making them very versatile. However, BATF rules require these guns to have rifled barrels, lest they be short barreled shotguns, which will cause small shot to spin and leave the barrel into an “ultra open” choke. Larger shot can result in the same broad strike pattern, but at close range, these shells offer a unique delivery of shots to target. The 2.5” 000 buckshot shell from Sellier & Bellot, for example fires three .36 caliber shot, or pellets, at approximately 1400 feet per second. This is similar to delivering three .32 bullets per single pull of the trigger. Or 15 shots per 5 round cylinder, making this a tempting defense load.

Boxer primed shell cases are but one reason that Sellier & Bellot remains a popular choice of ammunition for sportsmen all over the world. That their standards of quality were established in Bohemia in the 1820s and those standards have been built upon is another reason US shooters are learning what European hunters have known for generations: S&B delivers dependable quality and excellent performance.
